Built for quiet bathrooms in South Africa

Skinbar is an editorial product first: three plain words about a frame, a small journal, and long guides that respect UV, seasons and POPIA-minded privacy. This page is the awards-submission story — why it looks the way it does.

Experience

Skinbar comes from living with South African light — harsh Highveld sun, coastal humidity, load-shedding that turns bathrooms into yellow islands. The scan is deliberately small: it describes the picture you take, not a condition you might fear. That humility is the product.

Expertise we claim — and do not

We write cosmetic, educational guides with tables of contents and FAQs. We do not claim dermatology credentials or diagnostic accuracy. Where SPF or sensitive-skin topics sit near YMYL territory, the medical disclaimer stays visible and the language stays general. Affiliate shop links are labelled; they are not prescriptions.

Authority signals

Every guide is dated, word-counted, and linked from a curated llms.txt. The organisation schema, article schema and FAQ schema are in the HTML — not bolted on later. Contact and privacy paths are public. When a clinician review is added later, it will appear in this byline block.

Trust & privacy

Camera off until asked. Frames and journal rows in IndexedDB. No Skinbar account that uploads your face. Ads sit after content. PayFast handles cards when keys are live; until then checkout says so honestly. Read Privacy & POPIA and the medical disclaimer.

Design system

Two chromatic notes — ink and clay — on warm paper. Newsreader for display, DM Sans for UI. One restrained motion: a breathing orbit on the hero and a fade-rise as sections enter the viewport (honours prefers-reduced-motion). No WebGL theatre. Scan UI ships with idle, live, reading, ready and error states — empty journal and gallery cards are designed, not accidental.

Awards should reward clarity under bad bathroom light — not particle systems.

Contact

On-device by default

The face never needs our server. That is a design constraint, not a marketing line.

Three words

Light, evenness, warmth. Enough to coach lighting — not enough to impersonate a clinic.

Long guides

Nine essays, each 800+ words, with TOC and FAQ — written for phones between kettle and SPF.

Honest commerce

R99/mo after seven days. Checkout status is part of the product until PayFast keys land.
